How the Leaderboard works
Full transparency on how we rank tipsters. No hidden math, no surprises — just the formula and the rules in one place.
Why we don't rank by raw ROI
ROI is the most natural metric for a tipster — but on its own it punishes consistency and rewards luck. A user who places 5 bets on a wild weekend and hits a 3-leg accumulator can post a +200% ROI. Sorting by raw ROI would crown them, even though the result tells us nothing about how they'll do over the next 100 bets.
Meanwhile, a tipster grinding +6% over 300 settled bets has demonstrated a real edge — but they'd never reach #1 against a one-off lucky streak.
We needed a metric that rewards consistency without erasing hot streaks entirely. So we use Bayesian shrinkage.
The formula
The Best ROI tab ranks every qualifying tipster by their Bettsy Score:
- ROI — your raw return on investment, computed over settled bets only (pending bets don't count, ever).
- N — the number of settled bets you've saved since opting in.
- K — a constant = 30. You can think of it as "30 virtual prior bets at 0% ROI" that get blended with your real results. With few real bets, K dominates and pulls your score toward 0. With many real bets, K becomes negligible and your score approaches your raw ROI.
Worked examples
The same six tipsters under raw ROI vs. Bettsy Score:
| Tipster | Bets | Raw ROI | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🚀 Hot streak | 15 | +25.0% | +8.3% |
| 📈 Steady year | 250 | +7.0% | +6.3% |
| 🏆 Long-term grind | 500 | +5.0% | +4.7% |
| ⚡ Recent month | 25 | +10.0% | +4.5% |
| 🪙 Below water | 100 | -5.0% | -3.8% |
Read the Score column top-to-bottom — that's the leaderboard order. Notice that the 25-bet recent player at +10% ROI ranks below the 250-bet veteran at +7%, even though their raw ROI is higher. Sample size wins when ROIs are close.
The 15-bet hot streak at +25% ROI still tops the table. That's intentional — a +25% return over 15 bets is genuinely impressive (until it isn't). Shrinkage reins in marginal ROI advantages with small samples; it doesn't pretend extreme results aren't real.
The three sort tabs
- Best ROI — uses the Bettsy Score above. The default sort.
- Win Rate — raw win percentage over settled bets. No weighting — but the 10-bet threshold still applies, so a 10/10 player ranks above a 7/12 player honestly.
- Most Active — total bets saved since opting in. Rewards volume rather than performance — useful for finding consistently active community members.
Anti-gaming rules
- Only post-opt-in bets count. When you first toggle the leaderboard on, we stamp the date. Any bets you saved before that don't enter your stats — so you can't cherry-pick winners from your history.
- The opt-in date never resets. If you opt out and back in, the original date sticks. You can't game the cutoff.
- Pending bets are excluded. Both from ROI and from the qualifying count. We only count bets with a settled outcome (won or lost).
- Minimum 10 settled bets to qualify. Below that you don't appear, regardless of how good your numbers are.
- No backdating. All times are server-side; the client can't influence them.
What we never show
The leaderboard is fully privacy-respecting. Whether you opt in or not, these stay private:
- Your real name (only your display name + avatar appear)
- Your email address
- £ figures — total stake, total winnings, individual bet amounts
- Your individual betslips and bet history
- Any non-public profile details
We only display: rank, display name, avatar, ROI %, win rate, settled bet count, and average odds.
Rankings reflect each tipster's saved betslips and past results only. They are not betting advice or a recommendation to copy any user. Past performance does not guarantee future results, and all betting carries risk of loss.
